It’s not just another Monday. Artists from the entertainment business, athletes, art enthusiasts, fashion designers and members of high-society strutted down the red carpet posing for photographers on Monday night. It wasn’t an award show however, but only fashion industry’s monumental night. The annual event since 1946 takes place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City.
It is known as the either the Met Gala or the Met Ball. Everyone wears extravagant gowns relative to the theme, which this year was “China: Through The Looking Glass.” The attendees wore a lot of red and gold colors as well as the traditional Chinese floral print and embroidered dragons. There were also satin, lace, fur pieces and intricate headpieces, and those who “got the theme wrong” dressed in, not so modest, embellished sheer.
The Metropolitan Museum is booked for the entire event which involves music, drinks, and the opening of the new fashion exhibit which is correlative to the gala’s theme. While it may seem it is only an expensive party (with after-parties) for the crème de la creme, whilst prohibited to document it on social media, the Met Gala is a fundraising event. Millions of dollars are raised every year for the new fashion exhibit.
Vogue’s editor-in-chief, Anna Wintor, has been a chair of the event since 1995, who oversees both the benefit committee and the guest list. The evening’s co-chairs also included Jennifer Lawrence, Gong Li, Marissa Mayer, Wendi Murdoch and Silas Chou as the Honorary Chair.
